LWG Gold Leather in Baby Shoes: What the Rating Actually Proves

A Gold rating from the Leather Working Group is the most quoted credential in leather sourcing, and one of the most misunderstood. It is an audit of a tannery, not a test of a hide — which means it answers a question about how leather was made, not whether a particular piece is fit to sit against a nine-month-old’s foot. This page explains what the rating covers, what it cannot cover, what actually restricts leather in a children’s shoe, and what to write into a specification so the difference stops mattering.

What the Leather Working Group actually audits

The Leather Working Group is a multi-stakeholder organisation that audits tanneries, and rates them Gold, Silver, Bronze or Audited. The subject of the audit is the facility, not the hide that leaves it.

What the protocol looks at is, broadly: traceability of incoming hides, water use and effluent treatment, energy and emissions, waste, chemical management, and health and safety. A Gold rating means the tannery scored in the top band across that protocol.

Notice what is in that list and what is not. It is an environmental and operational audit. It is not a test of the finished leather against a chemical limit.

What LWG Gold does not tell you

This is the part that gets misread, and it gets misread in the buyer’s favour, which makes it dangerous.

If a supplier answers “is this leather safe for babies?” with “it is LWG Gold”, they have answered a different question.

What actually makes leather safe against a baby’s skin

In the EU the binding constraints sit in REACH, and for a leather children’s shoe only a handful are realistically relevant. Our compliance guide covers the full framework; in material terms these are the ones that decide a specification:

None of these are established by a tannery rating. They are established by testing the article, or by specifying materials tightly enough that the test is a formality rather than a gamble.

Chromium VI is the one to understand

It deserves its own paragraph because it behaves differently from everything else on that list. Chromium VI is generally not added. It forms when the chromium III used in conventional tanning oxidises — and that can happen during storage, in heat, or with the wrong finishing chemistry.

The practical consequence: a batch can test clean at the tannery and drift later. A certificate dated at the point of tanning is not a statement about the shoe your customer opens a year afterwards, in a warm shop, in a sealed box.

This is where a tannery’s chemical management — the thing LWG actually audits — stops being a marketing line and starts mattering. It does not certify the outcome. It changes the probability of it.

Chrome-free tanning, and what you give up

The most direct answer to a chromium VI problem is not to have chromium in the leather. Chrome-free leather is tanned with other agents — commonly synthetic or vegetable-based systems — so the oxidation pathway does not exist.

For babies and toddlers this is usual in our work, and we treat it as the default for that age group rather than an upgrade. It is worth knowing the trade-offs before you specify it across a whole range:

For a first-walker upper the trade is usually easy, because softness is what the product needs anyway. For a school-age boot with a structured quarter it is a real design decision, not an automatic one.

So why does the rating still matter?

Because of what it buys you indirectly, which is worth being precise about:

What to put in your specification

The useful version of this conversation is not “is it LWG Gold”. It is a short list your supplier can be held to:

That last line is the one brands skip and later regret. When a report is issued in the factory’s name, the brand holds a photocopy of somebody else’s evidence. We arrange testing at the accredited laboratory the brand chooses and have the laboratory invoice the brand directly, so the report exists in the brand’s own name — which is the name that answers a market-surveillance authority.

What it costs

Leather is usually the largest single line in the bill of materials for a children’s shoe, and it is charged by area — square decimetres consumed, not pairs. A chrome-free article from a Gold-rated tannery sits above a conventional chrome-tanned one, and the gap widens on unusual colours where the article has to be made to order.

Two things reduce that cost more than negotiating does: choosing a colour the tannery already runs, and choosing an article whose thickness suits the pattern so that consumption is not inflated by cutting waste. Both are decided at specification stage, not at quotation stage.

FAQ

Does LWG Gold mean the leather is safe for babies?
No. The Leather Working Group audits tanneries on environmental and operational criteria — traceability, water, energy, waste, chemical management and health and safety. It does not test the finished leather against a chemical limit, and no LWG rating states that a hide is below the chromium VI limit or free of restricted azo dyes. Those are tested properties of a batch of leather, not properties of a facility. LWG Gold is a strong sourcing filter and a defensible environmental claim; it is not a safety certificate.

Which substance restrictions actually apply to leather baby shoes in the EU?
Under REACH, the ones that realistically come up for a leather children's shoe are chromium VI in leather that contacts skin, restricted at 3 mg/kg; certain azo dyes that can release listed aromatic amines; nickel release from buckles, eyelets and rivets; and phthalates from plasticised components and prints. Ordinary footwear is not CE marked, and EN 71-3 is a toy standard that usually does not legally apply, though retailers often request it anyway.

What should I ask a supplier about leather for children's shoes?
Ask for the tannery, its LWG rating and the date of that rating; the article name, thickness in millimetres and finish; whether it is chrome-tanned or chrome-free, stated explicitly; a chromium VI result with test date and laboratory on the article you are actually buying; and an azo dye declaration per colourway rather than for the leather in general. Then ask who pays the laboratory and in whose name the report is issued — a report in the factory's name leaves the brand holding somebody else's evidence.
